The Proper Care of Your Toenails & Feet

We walk on them for hours on end every single day and yet, our feet and toenails are the least cared for part of our bodies. We rarely give them the consideration that we give other parts of our body. For instance, we are far more likely to rub some lotion on our elbows than we are to do so for our feet.

From the moment we leave the cradle and start walking on our own, we are not paying as much attention to our feet or toenails as we need to, and that might cost us later in life.

The first step to taking good care of your feet is to make sure they are washed correctly. If you have any issues with flexibility, then invest in any of the many products that will allow you to accomplish this task without risking life and limb in a slippery shower.

Take note of how your feet feel when you are washing them: Do they hurt anywhere? Are there rough patches of skin or is the skin dry and cracked, especially on the heel? Are there any strange feeling areas between the toes? Lastly, look at the toenails for any strange colors and appearance.

Beware of Bad Footwear!

Shoes that do not fit correctly and socks that do not allow the air to flow through can make your feet prime targets for various types of fungus that love to live and breed in dark and damp environments. Make sure that you wear shoes that not only fit well, but feel good. There should be no pinching or twisting in the toe box. Socks should be made of natural materials, like cotton or wool, rather than nylon which does not breathe at all.

In the summer months, if you are wearing open-toe shoes and are going into water or other situations that could put you in contact with fungus of any kind, you have to be even more vigilant about cleaning your feet.

The Toenails

Each of the toenails should be inspected on a regular basis. If you are a woman who likes to keep her toenails painted, allow some time between color changes to inspect the health of the nail before reapplying. You should also note that certain colors of nail polish may stain the nails and leave them with a yellowed appearance. There should be no dents, cracks, hollowed areas or splitting of the nail. There should also be no peeling or flaking of the nails.

The toenails are frequently injured, which can leave them discolored. Some injuries can be so severe, that they can cause nails to turn black and then fall off. The nail can also be traumatically pulled off, which is very painful. If you are not a diabetic, you can trim your nails making sure that there are no rough edges and that the nail is trimmed evenly. You can also file the edges of your nails down as well.

If you see anything out of the ordinary, especially if you have not had an accident or injury which involved the toenail, it might be a wise idea to see a podiatrist so that the problem can be stopped it its tracks before it becomes an unsightly and painful condition.
