TOENAIL FUNGUS TREATMENT:
Which One is Right? Are you Confused?Diagnose Toenail Fungus Properly Before Starting Treatment
Some folks generally assume that all cases of nail discoloration and thickening are symptoms of a toenail fungal infection. Unfortunately, because this has been assumed for many years, many cases of supposed ‘nail fungus’ have been treated unsuccessfully. While nail thickening, crumbling and discoloration are in fact symptoms of a fungal infection, they are not exclusive to this condition.
Keep in mind that there are various conditions and situations that can alter the condition of a nail. Sometimes a simple trauma or injury to a toenail can have permanent repercussions such as a thickened nail or a discolored nail (often times cause by a build up of keratin under the nail). This is common in athletes and individuals who perform rigorous activities while wearing shoes that are too tight.
Sometimes different diseases are to blame for an altered toenail. Psoriasis, for example, can cause abnormalities in the toenail because it can affect the growth rate of the top layer of the skin. Other diseases that can cause similar conditions in a toenail are kidney disease or metal poisoning.
Another completely unrelated situation that can cause similar repercussions to the toenail is the continued application of nail polish. Leaving polish on for extended periods of time allows the chemicals found in most nail polish to seep into the nails and leave discoloration. The constant removal and application of nail polish can also leave a weakened nail.
Since none of these situations are related to a fungal infection, treatment with an antifungal medication will prove useless. Always make sure you notice any abnormalities in your toenails in relation to your immediate environment and health status to make sure that you are not dealing with a possible side effect from a different condition. Once you have diagnosed a nail fungal infection properly, it is important that you immediately apply a toenail fungus treatment to the affected area. There are many effective, low cost treatments available to help you rid yourself of this embarrassing condition.
